Nine Reasons Banktivity is Awesome

Banktivity forecast
Things are looking good for Banktivity users

There are a multitude of personal finance applications out there that have all kinds of bells and whistles. Some useful, some not. Any more most of them that are any good REQUIRE a subscription fee which can get fairly obnoxious. That $8/month app might not seem like much but over the course of 10 years, that is going to add up to a chunk of change – $960 in this example. In many cases, you’ll also have to add sales tax onto that price.

With that in mind, the $69.99 price tag for Banktivity does not look too bad. And this thing is completely packed with features. I’m just going to cover the ones that stand out that either aren’t present in other applications or aren’t as full-featured in other applications.

  1. The amount of details packed into the summary screen. Just opening up the app can give you a great snapshot of where you stand including account balances, savings rate for the past 30 and 365 days, portfolio gains, if your budget is on track, and income vs expenses for the last twelve months.
  2. The calendar. You can access this right from the sidebar. It shows previous and upcoming transactions you have scheduled as well as your net worth on any day that has or will have a transaction. Plus each week shows the percent increase or decrease in your net worth.
  3. You have the ability to create multiple budgets to reset your budget without losing transaction history. No need to start fresh and lose all your transaction history.
  4. There is a budget trendline – an easy to read indicator to see if your budget is on track this month.
  5. You can organize your accounts in a multiple level folder. Each folder shows the total account balance of everything they contain. Accounts can split up any way you want. I use the following:
    • Money (which includes cash, bank account, and credit card subfolders)
    • Invesments (including college fund, health savings accounts, retirement accounts, and regular investment subfolders)
    • Real estate which at present only includes the value of my home.
  6. Configurable budgets and reports. You can include or exclude any accounts or categories, either by manually including or excluding, or by using rules, such as exclude investment accounts from your budget. The reports also include forecasts based on your scheduled transactions, as shown in the image for this article.
  7. Advanced configurations for scheduled transactions such as having transactions happen every number of days, weeks, months, or years apart and you can define the number. You can also set transactions to happen on certain days of the month like the 6th and the 21st.
  8. The management of investment accounts is very flexible. You can track mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and there is a category for “other” to track non-standard investments like the value of your coin collection.
  9. Their mobile sync does not require a subscription. It includes pin code or Touch ID to unlock your data.

This may seem like a ton of information and really the best thing about Banktivity is you can start simple with a checking and savings account and add in complexity as your needs change including retirement accounts or buying real estate.
